Frequently
Asked Questions
Do
I need a partner?
No.
You never need to have a partner to learn how to dance. There are
enough people who don't have one to make sure there will be people with
whom you can dance, and we frequently rotate partners because even people
who come with a partner will often like to see what it is like to
dance with someone else. After all, at a dance event, you will often
dance with more than one person, too!! We also frequently have "dance
volunteers" to help even things out. These are often "teachers in training"
or staff members who help out if there are extra leaders or followers.
Do
I have to change partners?
No...
although we do encourage it for several reasons. 1.) You will learn
faster if you do. Years of experience has proved this out.
2.) No matter what you think, when you and your regular partner are at
a dance event, there will be times when your friends will ask one of you
to dance. If you've never danced with anyone else, you'll only be
able to dance with that one person. 3.) Believe it or not, we tend
to be much nicer when we're dancing with someone other than our regular
partner. If something goes wrong with our regular partner, our first
response is usually, "why did you do that? You messed me up!"
our usual response to another classmate is, "I'm sorry, that must have
been my fault." You will most likely learn better with someone else
because you will look at what you did wrong rather than what your
partner
did wrong. Rather than having to
separate
couples who are bickering
on the floor, which isn't fun for everyone, we'd rather avoid the conflict
altogether by encouraging couples to rotate.
How
Should I dress for class?
Comfortably.
Dancing is exercise and while you might want to wear a full length gown
or tuxedo to a dance event, it isn't all that practical for a dance class.
Mind you, if you want to wear a formal... we'd never stop you! We
don't really have a dress code, but the following are a few guidelines
past students have recommended. 1.) Try to avoid shorts or short
skirts. You'll be dancing close enough to other students that some
of them might be a little uncomfortable if you do so. And besides...
dress shoes, dark socks and shorts will never be in fashion!!
2.) Common sense asks us not to wear clothes with sayings or slogans that
others might find offensive. 3.) Be careful of clothing or jewelry
that has lots of dangly things on it that can get caught on someone else's
sleeve or clothing. 4.) It is always wise to dress with an extra
layer or two. The room that feels chilly while you are waiting for
class to begin can feel warm once you start moving!!
What
about shoes?
We
encourage you to wear the kind of shoes you'd wear while out dancing at
your favorite dance club (which we hope is right here at the BBB!)
Avoid sandals or anything that doesn't attach to your heel and athletic
shoes are usually a bad idea. The rubber sole that keeps you
from slipping on the sidewalk or tennis court will make it harder to turn
and slide on the dance floor. Unless some physical disability prevents
it, we recommend something with a leather sole. There are specially
designed "athletic style" dance shoes available with a special sole to
make dancing easier if you really need your "tennies."
